GETTING TO KNOW ASHANTI

QSM: Your journey in fashion is incredibly inspiring. Can you take us back to a moment from your childhood when your love for fashion clashed with the feelings of not being represented in the industry due to your size? How did you navigate those emotions?

Ashanti: As a plus size child, navigating the world of fashion felt like walking a tightrope. Unlike my peers, I found myself limited to clothing from the women’s or juniors’ department, which often skewed towards a more mature aesthetic. While my friends were selecting playful and age-appropriate outfits, I was left feeling like I had to settle for clothing that didn’t quite reflect my youthful spirit.

This struggle persisted into my teenage years and followed me into adulthood. Despite the challenges, I refused to let my size dictate my sense of style. Instead, I embraced the opportunity to experiment with trends and create looks that felt uniquely me. Sure, it was frustrating to not have the same options as my peers, but my love for fashion ran deep.

Styling became my creative outlet, allowing me to transform my wardrobe into something I truly cherished. With a keen eye for trends and a passion for self-expression, I learned to curate outfits that reflected my personality and made me feel confident in my own skin. Each day became an opportunity to showcase my individuality through fashion, turning mundane tasks like getting dressed into moments of empowerment.

Emotionally, the journey was fraught with insecurity and frustration. But through it all, my love for fashion remained unwavering. It was this love that propelled me forward, pushing me to redefine what it means to be stylish regardless of size. In the process, I discovered the transformative power of styling – not just as a means of dressing up, but as a tool for self-acceptance and empowerment.

Today, as I look back on my journey, I’m grateful for the lessons learned and the growth experienced. While the road may have been rocky at times, it ultimately led me to a place of self-assurance and confidence. Fashion will always be a part of my identity, but more importantly, it serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience that lies within each of us, no matter our size.

QSM: Changing schools and diving into art and fashion marked a turning point in your life. Can you share a specific memory or experience from that time that fueled your determination to pursue your passion despite the challenges?

Ashanti: Before I made the pivotal decision to change schools, my days were filled with more struggles than successes. As a plus-size student attending a regular district middle school, I felt like I didn’t quite fit in. Bullied for my size and grappling with a curriculum that didn’t nurture my creative spirit, I longed for a fresh start – a chance to explore my passion for art in an environment that celebrated diversity and creativity.

That opportunity came when I transferred to a school nestled in the heart of Downtown Dallas. Suddenly, I found myself navigating the bustling streets and vibrant culture of the city, a stark contrast to the suburban landscape I was accustomed to. It was a thrilling experience, and I dove headfirst into all that Downtown Dallas had to offer – from visiting the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) to exploring the surrounding galleries and attending cultural events.

The DMA quickly became a sanctuary for me, a place where I felt truly alive and inspired. It was more than just a museum; it was a gateway to a world of history, culture, and artistic expression. As I wandered through its halls, I was captivated by the diverse array of artwork on display – from classical paintings to contemporary installations. But it was the museum’s collection of artifacts – the intricate wardrobes, jewelry, and trinkets from different cultures – that truly ignited my imagination.

It was here, surrounded by the rich tapestry of human creativity, that I discovered my love for vintage fashion. Each piece told a story, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who had come before us. I found myself drawn to the eclectic and eccentric styles of yesteryear, each garment a testament to the enduring power of self-expression.

Through art, I found solace and purpose. It was a lifeline during some of my darkest days, a reminder that beauty can be found even in the most unlikely of places. Today, as I reflect on my journey, I am grateful for the transformative power of art and the role it has played in shaping the person I am today. From bullied teenager to confident connoisseur of culture, my love for art has been a guiding light, illuminating the path to self-discovery and acceptance.

QSM: Advocating for size inclusivity is a powerful mission. Can you recall a moment or personal realization that sparked this advocacy within you, and how did it shape your approach to making a difference in the fashion world?

Ashanti: Entering college as a fashion merchandising student, I was eager to delve into the world of retail and design. However, it wasn’t long before I realized that size inclusivity was sorely lacking in the fashion industry. As I studied marketing and merchandising, I couldn’t ignore the glaring absence of representation for plus size individuals – a reality that hit close to home, given my own experiences as a plus size child navigating the limited options in stores.

Over the years, there has been progress. Designers have begun to incorporate plus size models into their shows, and retailers are expanding their size ranges and marketing efforts to include the plus size community. Brands like Lane Bryant, Torrid, and Eloquii have emerged as leaders in catering to plus size customers, providing stylish options that were once elusive.

But despite these advancements, there is still much work to be done. Size inclusivity is often treated as a passing trend, leaving the plus size community feeling uncertain about brands’ true commitment to diversity and representation. As an advocate for plus size fashion, my goal has been to amplify the voices of plus size individuals and ensure that the fashion industry recognizes our presence and value.

QSM: Dallas played a crucial role in your journey. Can you share a poignant moment or encounter that stands out, shaping your perspective and propelling you forward in your pursuit of a career in fashion?

Ashanti: Like in the second question above, changing schools was the poignant moment that changed everything for me artistically and fashion wise that made want to pursue a career in my career in fashion.

QSM: Being a witness to the industry's evolution towards diversity must have been an emotional journey. Can you share a particular experience that touched your heart, highlighting the positive changes you've seen for plus size individuals in the fashion world?

Ashanti: Through my journey as a content creator, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with incredible individuals who have shared their stories of empowerment and self-acceptance. Whether it’s through inspiring others to embrace their bodies or challenging industry norms, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of fashion as a tool for self-expression and confidence.

The support and love I receive from friends, family, and followers of all sizes and ages reaffirms the importance of my advocacy work. Knowing that I’ve played a role in someone else’s journey toward self-assurance fills me with pride and motivates me to continue pushing for change in the fashion industry.

As I look to the future, my passion for size inclusivity burns brighter than ever. With each step forward, I remain committed to championing diversity, representation, and empowerment in fashion, ensuring that every individual feels seen, valued, and celebrated – regardless of their size.

QSM: Reflecting on your personal growth and achievements, if you could have a heart-to-heart conversation with your younger self, what encouraging words or advice would you share, knowing the challenges she faced and the remarkable woman you've become?

Ashanti: If I could turn back time and have a conversation with my younger self, I would flood her with words of affirmation and encouragement. Growing up as a girl who faced relentless bullying, I know firsthand the toll it can take on one’s self-esteem and sense of worth. So, above all else, I would want my younger self to know just how truly special and resilient she is.

First and foremost, I would emphasize her beauty – not just on the outside, but the beauty that radiates from within. I would remind her of her creativity and intelligence, urging her to never doubt her abilities or talents. Despite the hurtful words hurled her way, I would reassure her that she is indeed fashionable and has a unique sense of style that deserves to be celebrated.

In the face of adversity, I would urge her to stand tall and never compromise her values. Even though she may be shy and quiet, I would remind her of the strength that lies within her, encouraging her to speak up for herself and demand the respect she deserves.

Most importantly, I would remind her to hold onto her passion for art and fashion with unwavering determination. I would share with her the transformative power that creativity has in healing wounds, lifting spirits, and fostering confidence. Through the darkest moments of depression and insecurity, I would assure her that her love for art and fashion will be a guiding light, leading her towards happiness, peace, and self-assurance.

In times of doubt and despair, I would remind her of the presence of God – a constant source of comfort and strength, even when it may seem like He is distant. I would reassure her that every experience, no matter how painful or challenging, serves a purpose in shaping her into the strong, confident, and inspiring woman she is destined to become.

As I reflect on my journey and the hurdles I’ve overcome, I am filled with gratitude for the resilience and determination that carried me through. And while I may not be able to change the past, I take solace in knowing that every trial and tribulation has ultimately led me to a place of self-love, acceptance, and empowerment.
